Why Natural Wool?
The wool fiber is the most complex natural textile fiber. It absorbs moisture yet repels water; it stretches, then springs back to shape; it resists dirt, yet absorbs dyes .Wool can absorb up to 30% of it's weight in moisture, and wick it into the air. This keeps you warm when it's cool and cool when it's warm. Synthetics, by contrast, do not absorb moisture, wick it way from the body to the fiber surface which makes you feel clammy when its warm and chilly when it's cool.
Out of concern for the purity of the wool, the health of the animals and the ecosystem, and to ensure a successful commitment to quality, Pixel Organics is using Pure Grow Wool TMfor all our completely made in California organic mattresses.
In Sonoma County, California, a regimen of stringent controls was adopted years ago to establish what is known as Pure Grow WoolTM. The result of this program is a distinctive line of woolen products, scrupulously cleaned and created without bleaches, formaldehydes, dyes, or animal cruelty by more than 200 California wool ranchers. The growers participating in the program follow responsible and healthful farming practices to create a superior and "pure" product, which is easily distinguishable from the current standards. The production of Pure Grow WoolTM and the bedding derived from it has a lasting beneficial impact on our natural environment as well as your personal sleep environment.
The sheep raised in the Pure Grow WoolTM program experience positive, humane, non-crowded living conditions. They receive plenty of fresh air, daylight, clean and roomy shelters, and grazing management to prevent negative environmental impact on the land. They have a natural chemical free, pesticide free, healthy diet.
Pure Grow WoolTM is as Pure as it Comes.
The Pure Grow WoolTM program follows organic agricultural practices, and the wool is tested for purity by UC Davis. There are no pesticides on the pasture, no chemicals in the animal feed, biodegradable soap used for lanolin removal, the wash house recycles the lanolin and they use a land management system for a low impact on the environment. Pure grow protocol for farming wool is being considered as the standard for organic wool certification in California.
This wool is completely untreated. No chemicals are used to clean the wool. The shearing rooms are kept clean, free of dust, pests and dirt. Pure Grow WoolTM is washed without fragrant soaps or detergents, chlorine, formaldehyde or carbonization chemicals. The wool is washed many times in hot water.
Pure Grow WoolTM does not use a carbonization process, as with most regular wool, so there is no carbonic acid. Some people have allergic reactions to these acids. Most people do not have any allergic problems with this wool because it does not contain chemicals (formaldehyde or carbonic acid).
The wool is purchased at healthy prices to support local farmers. The farmers practice rotational grazing and responsible, sustainable land management with no chemicals. The sheep are handled with the utmost care. There is 1 1/2 to 2 acres per animal and they are free to roam on the properties around Sonoma County, California.
The Pure Grow WoolTM is carefully inspected for length, strength and purity, all of the characteristics of the finest wool. The Pure Grow Wool standard requires that the fibers chosen are between 1" - 1 1/2" in length. It is this length which helps maximize the wool's resilience, resulting in the best all natural bedding products available.
