Reinventing Office
It was almost a year ago now that we locked the doors to our Bendix Building offices in downtown Los Angeles. It was a bit of a find and a hard decision to close the doors. Penthouse location, private roof access, natural light for taking photos -- you get the picture. But life had changed since we moved back to Los Angeles.
Our family was +1 with the addition of June. Our warehousing had moved off site to a fulfillment center. Chris had set up a virtual network allowing us to access our "work" computer from home. And gas, as you will all recall, was rising close to $4 per gallon here in LA. Life decided it was time to "work from home."
Our office now works at the speed of life. It's centered in our living room. I take the couch, Chris the chair across the room. Laptops in tow. Somedays we get a solid 4 hours without interuption. Others we're lucky for 20 minutes.
Work days sometimes extend until the wee hours of the night after the kids have been put down for the day. Yet, it's a compromise I am happy to make. Instead of an hour and a half in the car everyday -- I get to make my kids breakfast and perhaps play some Play-Doh. Or, on those days that work beckons, get an early jump. We eat lunch with them nearly every day. But most importantly we're here when they need us.
So now you know our "dirty little secret" . . . when you call that 800 number to get advice on an organic crib mattress or what size bodysuit to buy -- you're call center is located from the couch, or on a sunny afternoon, the back steps.
